“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…” – Declaration of Independence
Really read those words. Written by men who some of which owned slaves (we’ll try to let that go and and take their words and make them REAL).
- All men are created equal. ALL. Not just the ones who think/look/speak/act as you do.
- The pursuit of happiness. Not just that as defined by you or me. The right to seek one’s own individual happiness.
- Consent of the governed. Vote. If everyone votes, the people’s will shall be done.
- Self-evident? It seems so, but it’s not. People have to fight every day for basic, unalienable rights.
It’s possible that our founding fathers lacked foresight and did not foresee a future America of diversity and difference. Did they lack foresight? Or did they intentionally word the constitution this way to make sure that “all men” would be treated equally?
At any rate, this is what they gave us and it’s what we have to work from. It would be really cool if we all kinda just start from here, today, and go with it. 🙂
