On this Friday before Labor Day, 50 years ago today, my beautiful stepmother arrived in Dallas with her family as a refugee from Cuba. She was 16.
She started school the Tuesday after Labor Day, understanding very little. Certainly shocked and terrified. They came with a suitcase under the guise of taking a vacation to Mexico, wearing an unusual amount of jewelry.
She became a US citizen, finished High School with honors and a full academic scholarship to SMU, where she earned 2 Bachelor degrees: Spanish and Mathematics.
God bless America, who welcomed her, therefore blessing all of us!
