Our Humble Little Cottage
If you want to be a stay at home mom, or if you want your wife to be a stay at home mom, you can probably do that. It’s about choices.
Back in “the day”, there were plenty stay at home moms. Let me tell you what has changed: people’s “wants” have become “needs”.
People want a nice new vehicle every few years, and not necessarily an economy one, either.
And every person in the house wants one. Back in “the day”, there was often only one family car. When a teenager boy got a car, it was a jalopy that he and Dad spent a year fixing up.
People also want a home that in my hometown, only the more wealthy could afford. Now everyone wants that home.
People want the best clothes. Not just a special treat at Christmas, but a full wardrobe of them.
How often do most families eat out? When I was growing up, people generally ate out once a week or once a month, and it was often restaurants like KFC.
People make the decision to get divorced, and often it’s just because they’re discontent, not because there are serious issues. Back in “the day”, people stayed married and therefore more financially secure.
I’m a one income household and have been for a long time. I don’t buy the argument of “one income doesn’t cut it anymore”, “times have changed”, etc…Now I’m not saying I’m the financial model of the universe. But I drive a car that many people wouldn’t find good enough. I live in a home that many people wouldn’t find good enough. Both are paid for. I could have had the good life. It would have required me staying in a marriage that I was unhappy in. I made a choice, and have lived my life accordingly.
BTW: I’d love to have a nice new car, but I wouldn’t move even if I won the lottery. I also love to eat out. If I can’t afford something that I “need”, I only have to look at my Mint.com account and see that my disposable income has often gone to “wants”. The only thing I want “the best” in is technology. As Oprah said “you can have it all, you just can’t have it all at once”.
Choices. There’s MY insensitive rant for the day.
