I am reading this book right now. Having finished chapter 1, it’s hard to explain how it makes me feel.

The most important thing I take away from Chapter 1 is:

“Resources of people should be analyzed before dispensing advice or seeking solutions to the situation. What may seem to be very workable suggestions from a middle-class point of view may be virtually impossible given the resources available to those in poverty.”

And:

“Two things that help one move out of poverty are education and relationships.”

“Even though the income of the individual may rise significantly, may of the patterns of thought, social interaction, cognitive strategies, etc…remain with the individual.”

“To move from poverty to middle class, or middle class to wealth, an individual must give up relationships for achievement.”
